ABOUT

Winner of the 2018 Barry Manilow Competition, pianist Megan Angriawan has performed in music festivals and competitions throughout the US, Europe, and Asia. In addition to being an active performer and award-winning pianist, Megan enjoys teaching and musicological research. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Pauline Favin Memorial Prize, the Lillian Gutman Memorial Prize, and induction to the Epsilon Omicron Chapter of the Pi Kappa Lambda Society Peabody Chapter. Megan holds the top prize and honor from the Brevard Music Center 2019 Zimmerli Piano Competition. Additionally, Megan has been a featured artist at the 2020 Ian Hobson International Piano Festival in Puerto Rico.

As a pedagogue, Megan is committed to expanding the importance of Western classical music. She is dedicated to performing and sharing classical music with a broader audience and future generations. Her passion for sharing music leads her to be a dedicated performer and educator in piano and music theory. Believing that music is a medium for both intellectual and emotional growth, Megan aims for her students to love and enjoy music, while fostering them to be independent, life-long musicians. She believes music can support critical thinking and creative problem-solving, and provide opportunities for self-expression.

In her musicological research, Megan is motivated to share music from the written page. She has been active in researching works and composers to present at Symposiums such as the Eastern Michigan University Undergraduate Symposium. An example of this can be seen in her research of four composers from different countries with distinct musical personalities, training, and influences who wrote piano pieces that describe water. This process of discovery inspired Megan to share her research with audiences to help them feel and experience the music. Because of her dedication to musicological research, Megan was awarded the EMU Symposium Undergraduate Research Fellow, the Dr. John W. Porter Research Award, and the Undergraduate Research Stimulus Award.

Megan is pursuing her DMA in piano performance and pedagogy under the tutelage of Christopher Taylor and Jessica Johnson at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she serves as a Teaching Assistant in the Music Theory Department. Megan holds her Master of Music and Graduate Performance Diploma from Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, studying with distinguished pianist Benjamin Pasternack. At Peabody, Megan served as a graduate assistant of Dr. Vid Smooke in the Music Theory Department. She received her Bachelor of Music in piano performance from Eastern Michigan University, studying with the prestigious pianist and pedagogue, Dr. Garik Pedersen. Her other major influences include Hyun-Sook Park, Richard Goode, Johannes Sebastian Nugroho, Boaz Sharon, Ian Hobson, and Craig Nies.
